Why Val d’Isère
Val d’Isère is a skier’s resort first. It sits high, at 1,850 m, at the head of the Tarentaise valley, it opens in late November and closes in early May, and together with Tignes it offers more than 300 km of pistes on some of the most snow-sure terrain in the Alps. The famous Face de Bellevarde hosted the men’s downhill at the 1992 Olympics, and every December the World Cup returns for the Critérium de la Première Neige.
Yet the village itself has kept its soul: a stone church, old chalets, and a lively, international après scene. La Folie Douce, the most famous après-ski party in the Alps, was born here.

The skiing
- Experts come for the Face de Bellevarde, the Olympic downhill: steep, long and often mogulled. Then there’s the off-piste: some of the most famous freeride terrain in France, best explored with a local guide.
- Intermediates cruise the wide, high runs of Solaise and Le Fornet, and cross to Tignes for a day on the Grande Motte glacier.
- Beginners start on the easy areas at the top of Solaise and Bellevarde, which have free lifts, and ride back down by lift rather than skiing to the village.
Marc’s insider tip On a powder morning, go to Le Fornet: it’s the quietest sector and the snow holds beautifully. And book a table for lunch at Le Signal at the top of the Fornet cable car before you set off.
Where to eat on the mountain
- La Fruitière (Bellevarde, 2,290 m): fine dining with a see-and-be-seen crowd, right next to the original Folie Douce. Stay for the party after lunch.
- Le Signal (2,320 m, Le Fornet): small menu, excellent quality, table service upstairs and sweeping valley views.
- Edelweiss (2,060 m, Le Fornet): traditional French mountain food with west-facing views down the valley.
- La Peau de Vache (2,220 m, Bellevarde): burgers and steaks halfway down a black run, with a candlelit Savoyard interior.
- Trifollet (2,000 m, La Daille): lively and popular, famous for tartiflette and pizza.
- L’Etincelle (1,850 m, foot of Solaise): grilled meats, homemade pastries and a big sunny terrace.
Après & evenings
Val d’Isère has some of the best après in France. La Folie Douce at La Daille is the original: dancing on the terrace in ski boots, live music and cabaret from mid-afternoon. In the village, the bars stay lively late into the night. Prefer it calm? A hotel bar by the fire and a long dinner work just as well here.
Snow: what to expect
We analysed six winters of measurements (2020/21 to 2025/26) from the Météo-France station Val d’Isère (Joseray, 1,850 m), at village level. Average snow depth:
| Month | Average snow depth |
|---|---|
| December | 53 cm |
| January | 89 cm |
| February | 107 cm |
| March | 107 cm |
| April | 68 cm |
That’s at village level. Most of the skiing is much higher, between 2,000 and 3,400 m, where the snowpack is deeper and lasts well into spring. Combined with a season from late November to early May, Val d’Isère is one of the safest bets in the Alps for good snow.
You can check today’s measured snow depth and the forecast in the box next to this article.
Getting there
- By plane: Geneva (around 3 hours by road), Chambéry or Lyon.
- By train: to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, then about 45 minutes by bus or transfer up the valley.
- Private transfer: we organise door-to-door transfers from any of these airports.
Good to know
- Lift pass: the Val d’Isère–Tignes pass covers the whole linked area.
- Off-piste: take a guide. The terrain is huge and avalanche conditions in the high Tarentaise can be serious.
- Early and late season: with lifts open from late November to early May, Val d’Isère is one of our top picks for December and April trips.
- December: the World Cup races on the Face de Bellevarde are a great show.
