Why Méribel
Méribel sits right in the middle of Les 3 Vallées, the largest linked ski area in the world, between Courchevel and Val Thorens. That makes it the perfect base: whichever valley has the best snow or the sun, you’re never far away.
The village was founded in the 1930s by a Scotsman, Colonel Peter Lindsay, and still follows his rule of building in wood and stone, chalet-style. The result is one of the prettiest purpose-built resorts in France, spread through the forest from Méribel Village and Méribel Centre up to Mottaret. It’s British-flavoured, family-friendly by day and very lively by night.
The ski area in numbers
| Les 3 Vallées | 600 km of pistes, linking Courchevel, Méribel, Les Menuires and Val Thorens |
| Altitude | about 85 % of the Méribel ski area above 1,800 m, up to 2,952 m at Mont Vallon |
| Signature run | Roc de Fer: 1992 Olympic venue, women’s World Cup and the 2023 World Championships, shared with Courchevel |
| Areas | Saulire, Tougnète, Mont Vallon, Mottaret, the Altiport forest |
The skiing
- Intermediates have endless choice: cruise the Méribel valley, then ski over to Courchevel or to Val Thorens and back in a day.
- Experts head for Mont Vallon, one of the longest runs in Les 3 Vallées, and the World Championship piste Roc de Fer and La Face.
- Families love the Altiport forest: the gentle Piste des Animaux winds through the trees, where you can spot wildlife on the way.
- Off-piste fans can drop from the ridges down towards Les Allues with a guide.
Marc’s insider tip Stay in Méribel Centre for the restaurants and après, or in Mottaret if you want to ski from the door at higher altitude. And on a storm day, the trees around the Altiport are the best skiing in the valley.
Lunch & après
Méribel is famous for its après. Le Rond Point above the village is a Méribel institution, with live music on the terrace from mid-afternoon, and La Folie Douce on the Saulire slopes brings its famous mountain party. For lunch, there’s everything from classic Savoyard huts to smart terraces with views over the valley; tell us your style and we’ll book.
Snow: what to expect
We analysed five winters of measurements (2021/22 to 2025/26) from the Météo-France snow station Méribel-Mottaret (1,700 m). Average snow depth:
| Month | Average snow depth |
|---|---|
| December | 47 cm |
| January | 73 cm |
| February | 87 cm |
| March | 80 cm |
The station is a manual measuring point in Mottaret that is only read during the season, so we don’t show an April average. The skiing goes much higher, up to almost 3,000 m, and Méribel has extensive snowmaking. For the most reliable snow and the longest days, go in February or March; on the higher slopes, April skiing is often excellent too.
You can check today’s measured snow depth and the forecast in the box next to this article.
Getting there
- By plane: Geneva (around 2.5 hours by road), Lyon or Chambéry.
- By train: to Moûtiers, then about 18 km up the valley by bus or transfer.
- Private transfer: we organise door-to-door transfers from all airports.
Good to know
- Lift pass: the Méribel valley pass is fine for most days; the full 3 Vallées pass is worth it for confident skiers.
- School holidays: British and French half-term weeks in February are the busiest of the season.
- Courchevel is right next door; read our Courchevel guide.
