Verbier: the insider guide

Switzerland's freeride capital: big, steep terrain in the 4 Vallées, Mont Fort at 3,330 metres and the liveliest après in the Swiss Alps.

Why Verbier

Verbier sits on a sunny, south-facing balcony at 1,500 metres, looking across to the Grand Combin and the Mont Blanc massif. It is Switzerland’s most international resort, a magnet for strong skiers, freeriders and anyone who likes their après with a soundtrack.

It’s also the western gateway to the 4 Vallées, one of Switzerland’s largest ski areas, which links Verbier with Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon and La Tzoumaz.

The ski area in numbers

Ski area 4 Vallées, linking Verbier, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon and La Tzoumaz
Pistes the 4 Vallées advertises 410 km of marked runs (independent measurements come out lower)
Lifts around 35 in the Verbier sector
Altitude 1,500 m (Verbier village) to 3,330 m (Mont Fort)
Valley access gondola from Le Châble (821 m), with a train station
Freeride the Bec des Rosses (3,222 m) hosts the final of the Freeride World Tour, Xtreme Verbier

The skiing

Verbier’s reputation is built on steep terrain, and it deserves it.

  • Experts head for Mont Fort: the summit at 3,330 m offers views to the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc and a famously steep mogul run back down.
  • Freeriders will find some of the best lift-served off-piste in Europe around Mont Gelé, Lac des Vaux and the Vallon d’Arby. Always go with a local mountain guide: the terrain is serious.
  • Intermediates have plenty to explore at Savoleyres and La Tzoumaz, sunny and quieter, and on the long cruising runs over to Nendaz and Veysonnaz.
  • Beginners start at the gentle slopes around Les Esserts, but Verbier is best for those who already ski with confidence.

Marc’s insider tip On a powder day, Verbier gets busy early. Go to Savoleyres first: the north-facing slopes towards La Tzoumaz hold fresh snow beautifully and most people rush straight for Mont Fort.

Where to eat on the mountain

  • Cabane du Mont-Fort (2,457 m): a real mountain refuge with one of the best terrace views in the area. Fondue and rösti.
  • Chez Dany (Clambin, 1,722 m): a cosy wooden cabin hidden in the forest above Verbier. Raclette and fondue.
  • La Marmotte (2,354 m): traditional Val de Bagnes dishes by day; in the evening it’s a skidoo ride up and a torch-lit sledge run home.
  • Les Chottes (2,210 m): a converted cow barn with an open fire, local platters and pasta.
  • Le Carrefour: one of Verbier’s oldest restaurants, with meat cooked on hot stones and a sun-baked terrace.
  • La Marlenaz: traditional and cosy, reached off-piste from Savoleyres, with superb views.

Dinner in Verbier

The village has a lively restaurant scene, from the “Potence” (meat on a hot rack) at Au Vieux Verbier to chilli fondue at Le Sonalon and fine dining at the Chalet d’Adrien. We’re happy to book the right table for your group.

Après & nightlife

Verbier is Switzerland’s party resort, but with style:

  • Farinet: the classic, with live bands on the terrace at après time and a lounge bar with DJs later.
  • Le Rouge: restaurant and club reachable on skis, with a big sunny terrace and DJs.
  • Pub Mont Fort: Verbier’s oldest pub, busy from après until late.
  • T-Bar: a favourite with locals.

Snow: what to expect

We looked at eleven winters of measurements (2015/16 to 2025/26) from the SLF station Lac des Vaux (2,550 m), right in the heart of Verbier’s freeride terrain. Average snow depth:

Month Average snow depth
December 82 cm
January 130 cm
February 167 cm
March 189 cm
April 181 cm

The snowpack usually peaks at around 2.2 m, and the station records roughly 7.5 m of fresh snow per season (modelled). Like most high Swiss resorts, Verbier is at its best from late January to early April, when the base is deep and the off-piste is properly covered.

You can check today’s measured snow depth and the forecast in the box next to this article.

Getting there

  • By train: to Martigny, then the regional train to Le Châble and the gondola up to Verbier. From Geneva airport it’s around 2.5 hours in total.
  • By car: about 2 hours from Geneva.
  • Private transfer: we organise door-to-door transfers from Geneva, Sion or Zurich.

Good to know

  • Lift pass: choose between the Verbier sector pass and the full 4 Vallées pass.
  • Off-piste: hire a guide. Avalanche risk in the 4 Vallées is real, and the best lines aren’t obvious.
  • Freeride World Tour: the final, Xtreme Verbier, takes place on the Bec des Rosses in spring. Watching it live is an unforgettable day.
