Engelberg & Titlis: the insider guide

Two hours from Zurich and up to 3,020 m: glacier skiing on the Titlis, the rotating Rotair cable car, legendary freeride terrain and a monastery village that feels refreshingly real.

Why Engelberg

Engelberg is Switzerland’s best-kept secret for skiers who don’t want to waste time getting there. The village sits at about 1,000 m around a 900-year-old Benedictine monastery, just two hours from Zurich airport by train, and above it rises the Titlis, whose glacier keeps the season going from mid-October to early May.

It’s a real village rather than a purpose-built resort, it’s popular with freeriders from all over the world, and on the sunny Brunni side of the valley it’s a lovely place for families.

The ski area in numbers

Pistes about 82 km: roughly 25 km blue, 45 km red, 11 km black and marked routes
Altitude about 1,000 m (village) to 3,020 m (Titlis glacier)
Areas Titlis–Trübsee–Stand, Jochpass–Engstlenalp and Brunni
Rotair the world’s first rotating cable car, up to the Titlis glacier
Season 2025/26 Titlis side 11 October 2025 to 3 May 2026, Brunni 6 December to 6 April

The skiing

  • Freeriders come for the steep, high terrain off the Titlis, including the famous Laub, a huge, wide face that is one of the classic off-piste descents in Switzerland. Go with a local guide.
  • Intermediates love the wide, sunny runs at Jochpass and Engstlenalp, and the long descents from Stand back towards the valley.
  • Families and beginners have Brunni, the sunny side of the valley, with easy runs, a children’s area and practice lifts.
  • Everyone should ride the Rotair at least once: the cabin turns 360° on the way up to the glacier.

Marc’s insider tip Engelberg is perfect for a long weekend: take the train from Zurich in the morning and you’re on the glacier by lunch. On a fresh-snow day, book a guide early; the Laub is legendary, and everyone in Engelberg knows it.

Where to eat

On the mountain, the restaurants at Trübsee, Stand and the Titlis summit serve classic Swiss food with big views, and on the Brunni side you’ll find cosy huts with sunny terraces. In the village, the old hotels and the monastery’s own cheese dairy are worth a visit. We’re happy to book the right table.

Snow: what to expect

We looked at eleven winters of measurements (2015/16 to 2025/26) from the SLF station Titlisboden (2,149 m), in the Titlis ski area. Average snow depth:

Month Average snow depth
December 80 cm
January 146 cm
February 199 cm
March 230 cm
April 238 cm

That’s one of the deepest snowpacks of all the resorts we cover. Engelberg sits on the northern edge of the Alps and catches storms from the north and west, and the snowpack typically reaches well over 2 m by March and April. The village itself is low, so for late-season trips the high slopes are the place to be.

You can check today’s measured snow depth and the forecast in the box next to this article.

Getting there

  • By train: from Zurich airport via Lucerne, about 2 hours, straight to the station in the village.
  • By car: about 1.5 hours from Zurich, 30 minutes from Lucerne.
  • Private transfer: we organise transfers from Zurich or Lucerne.

Good to know

  • Lift pass: the Titlis pass covers Titlis, Jochpass and Engstlenalp; Brunni has its own pass.
  • Combine it: Engelberg pairs beautifully with a few days in Lucerne before or after your ski week.
  • Off-piste: the terrain off the Titlis is serious glacier and avalanche terrain. Always ski it with a certified guide.

Planning a trip to Engelberg? A long weekend on the glacier, a freeride week with a guide or a family week on Brunni: tell us what you have in mind and we’ll send you two tailor-made proposals.
