Why Val Gardena
Val Gardena (Gröden in German, Gherdëina in Ladin) is the Dolomites as you imagine them: pale, jagged rock towers that glow pink at sunset, wide sunny slopes and three proud villages with their own language and woodcarving tradition. Selva (Wolkenstein) sits right at the foot of the mighty Sassolungo (Langkofel) and is the best base for skiers: the lifts start in the village, and the famous Sellaronda circuit passes straight through it.
Further down the valley, Santa Cristina is home to the Saslong, one of the classic World Cup downhills, and Ortisei (St. Ulrich) is the liveliest of the three, with a pedestrian centre, shops and the cable car up to the Seceda.

The skiing
Val Gardena is wonderful for confident intermediates: long, wide, perfectly groomed reds with jaw-dropping scenery, and enough variety to fill a week without repeating yourself.
- Ciampinoi: straight up from Selva. Runs back down to Selva, Santa Cristina and Plan de Gralba. These slopes have been skied since the 1930s, and Val Gardena is set to host the Alpine Ski World Championships in 2031.
- The Saslong: the World Cup downhill above Santa Cristina. On a normal day it’s open to everyone, and it’s a long, fast, unforgettable run.
- Seceda: the iconic ridge above Ortisei at 2,518 m. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Ortler and the Grossglockner. Ski down via Col Raiser to Santa Cristina.
- Seiser Alm: gentle, sunny and wide open. Perfect for beginners, families and a slow afternoon.
- The Sellaronda: starts right in Selva. Our Sellaronda guide tells you how to do it.
Lee’s insider tip Stay in Selva, not Ortisei, if skiing is your priority: the Dantercëpies gondola takes you up to the Passo Gardena and onto the Sellaronda, and the Ciampinoi gondola starts right in the village. Do the Seceda on a clear morning, before the clouds build up around the peaks.
Where to eat on the mountain
The huts are a big reason to come. Some of our favourites:
- Rifugio Emilio Comici (2,154 m, Plan de Gralba): at the foot of the Sassolungo, famous for fresh fish and seafood and a terrace you won’t want to leave. Book ahead.
- Baita Daniel Hütte (2,240 m, Seceda): panoramic sun terrace, Italian pasta, Knödel and Kaiserschmarrn, and a serious wine list.
- Sofie Hütte (2,410 m, Seceda): small, a little exclusive, with organic dishes and outstanding desserts.
- Ciampac Hütte (Selva, by the Dantercëpies): warm wooden interior and Ladin specialities such as crafuncins, spinach ravioli.
- Almgasthof Tirler (Seiser Alm): organic food and a cosy stube in the middle of the alpine meadow.
- Rifugio Friedrich August (2,298 m, Col Rodella): Lee’s favourite hut in the whole Dolomites, just over the Sella Pass on the Fassa side. Yaks and Highland cattle from its own organic farm, legendary krapfen, and a view of the Sassolungo, the Sella and the Marmolada. Read more in our Sellaronda guide.
Evenings in the valley
Après in Val Gardena is relaxed rather than wild: a drink at a hut on the last run down to Selva, then dinner. The South Tyrolean mix of Ladin, Austrian and Italian cooking is the real highlight: speck and Knödel one night, handmade pasta the next. Tell us what you like and we’ll book the right table.
Snow: what to expect
We analysed eleven winters of measurements (2015/16 to 2025/26) from the South Tyrol Weather Service station Seiser Alm Zallinger (2,055 m), inside the Val Gardena–Seiser Alm ski area. Average natural snow depth:
| Month | Average snow depth |
|---|---|
| December | 46 cm |
| January | 60 cm |
| February | 76 cm |
| March | 83 cm |
| April | 49 cm |
Natural snow in the Dolomites is usually lighter than in the northern Alps, and the base can be thin early in the season. That’s why 98 % of the pistes have snowmaking, and in our experience the grooming here is among the best anywhere. The upside of the drier climate: lots of blue-sky days. Mid-January to mid-March is our favourite window.
You can check today’s measured snow depth and the forecast in the box next to this article.
Getting there
- By plane: Innsbruck, Bolzano, Verona, Venice and Munich are all within reach. Innsbruck and Verona are usually the most convenient; allow around 2 to 3 hours by road.
- By train: to Ponte Gardena/Waidbruck or Bolzano on the Brenner line, then by bus or transfer into the valley.
- Private transfer: we organise door-to-door transfers from any of these airports.
Good to know
- Three languages: Ladin, German and Italian are all spoken, and every village has three names. Selva = Wolkenstein = Sëlva.
- Lift pass: if you plan to ski the Sellaronda or explore further, take the Dolomiti Superski pass rather than the Val Gardena-only pass.
- Non-skiers love it: winter walks on the Seiser Alm, the toboggan run on the Raschötz, woodcarving workshops in Ortisei.
- December: the Saslong World Cup races bring a festival atmosphere to Santa Cristina.
