Why Cervinia
Breuil-Cervinia is the Italian face of the Matterhorn (here called Cervino). The village sits high at 2,050 m, the skiing goes up to 3,480 m on the Plateau Rosa glacier, and the season runs from late October to early May. Most of the slopes are wide, sunny and gentle, perfect for long, easy cruising, and you can ski across the border to Zermatt for lunch.
The village itself is more functional than pretty, but you get the same mountain as Zermatt at Italian prices: cappuccino, pasta and wine on the mountain cost a fraction of what they do on the Swiss side.
The ski area in numbers
| Pistes | about 157 km in Cervinia and Valtournenche, about 360 km including Zermatt |
| Lifts | 24 in the Cervinia–Valtournenche area |
| Altitude | 2,050 m (village) to 3,480 m (Plateau Rosa) |
| Signature run | the Ventina: about 11 km from 3,480 m down to the village |
| Season 2025/26 | 25 October 2025 to 3 May 2026 |
The skiing
- Intermediates are in heaven: long, wide reds and blues, and the Ventina, one of the longest runs in the Alps, from the glacier all the way to the village.
- Zermatt day: from Plateau Rosa you ski across the border into Switzerland. You need the international pass, and check the weather: the high lifts close in strong wind, and you don’t want to be stuck on the wrong side.
- Valtournenche: the quieter, lower part of the ski area, linked to Cervinia, with excellent pistes and fewer people.
- Beginners have gentle slopes right above the village.
Lee’s insider tip Ski the Ventina early in the morning, when the corduroy is fresh and the sun lights up the Matterhorn. And if you cross to Zermatt for lunch, leave enough time to get back up: the last lifts back to Italy close earlier than you’d think.
Where to eat
On the mountain, the Rifugio Guide del Cervino at Plateau Rosa (3,480 m) is one of the highest restaurants in the Alps, and Chalet Etoile at Plan Maison is a long-time favourite for a sunny lunch with a view of the Matterhorn. In the village, Aosta Valley cooking is the thing: fontina, polenta, game and good red wine from the valley. We’ll book the right tables.
Snow: what to expect
We couldn’t find open, long-term snow-depth data for Cervinia’s ski area, so there are no averages here. What we can say: with the village at 2,050 m and the skiing up to 3,480 m, Cervinia is one of the most snow-sure resorts in the Alps, and the long season from late October to early May proves it. In midwinter it can be cold and windy high up; February to April offers the best mix of snow and sunshine. The live box next to this article shows the forecast for the coming days.
Getting there
- By plane: Turin (about 2 hours), Milan Malpensa or Geneva (both about 2.5 hours).
- By train: to Châtillon-Saint-Vincent in the Aosta Valley, then about 30 km by bus or taxi.
- Private transfer: we organise door-to-door transfers.
Good to know
- Lift pass: choose the Cervinia–Valtournenche pass or the international pass with Zermatt.
- Value: Cervinia is one of the best-value high-altitude resorts in the Alps.
- Zermatt: read our Zermatt guide for the Swiss side of the mountain.
