Why Livigno
Livigno is different. It’s a long, high valley at 1,816 m in the far north of Lombardy, closer to Switzerland than to Milan, and one of the coldest and most snow-sure places in Italy. For centuries it was so remote that it was granted a special status: Livigno is a duty-free zone, so ski gear, perfume, watches and drinks are noticeably cheaper than elsewhere.
In 2026 the world came to visit: Livigno hosted the Olympic freestyle skiing and snowboard events, from big air and halfpipe to moguls and ski cross. The legendary snowpark on Mottolino is still one of the best in Europe.

The skiing
- Freestylers come for the Mottolino snowpark, with lines for every level, from first boxes to pro kickers.
- Intermediates have wide, open, treeless slopes on both sides of the valley, and the snow stays cold and good thanks to the altitude.
- Families benefit from easy slopes close to the village, a free bus network and lots of ski schools.
- Plan your day by the sun: ski the side that’s in the sun in the morning, then cross the valley after lunch.
Lee’s insider tip Livigno is cold in January. Bring proper layers, and for the best mix of snow and sunshine come in March, when the days are long and the snow is still wintry. And don’t do your shopping before you arrive: wait until you’re in Livigno.
Where to eat & après
Mountain food in Livigno is hearty Valtellina cooking: pizzoccheri (buckwheat pasta with cabbage, potatoes and cheese), sciatt (crispy cheese fritters) and bresaola, washed down with a glass of Valtellina red. Après is lively and good value, both on the slopes and in the pedestrian centre. Tell us your style and we’ll book the right places.
Snow: what to expect
There is no long-term open snow-depth series for Livigno that we could use for averages, but the live box next to this article shows today’s measured snow depth at the Livigno Mottolino station (1,869 m) from ARPA Lombardia. The village is one of the highest in the Alps, the valley is cold, and the season usually runs from late November to early May. Natural snow can be patchy early in the season, which is why the slopes have extensive snowmaking; from January to April conditions are usually very reliable.
Getting there
Livigno is remote, and that’s part of its charm. Plan for a longer transfer:
- From Switzerland: via Zernez and the single-lane Munt la Schera tunnel, the most direct route from Zurich.
- From Italy: via Bormio and the Foscagno pass.
- By plane: Innsbruck (about 2.5 hours by road at best), Zurich or Milan Bergamo.
- Private transfer: we organise door-to-door transfers and the best route for the day.
Good to know
- Duty-free: prices in the shops are noticeably lower, and so is fuel.
- Mountain passes can close in heavy snow; we plan transfers with a buffer.
- Value: with good hotels at fair prices, Livigno is one of the best-value high-altitude resorts in the Alps.
